Two missions, one foundation. Investing in the communities we call home — and standing beside children and families navigating childhood illness.
Tully & Weiss Charities was built on the belief that healthy communities and healthy children are not separate causes — they are the same cause, seen from different angles.
From Martinez to Redding, we invest in the neighborhoods, schools, and small businesses that form the backbone of Northern California life. Strong communities produce better outcomes for every family within them — including the most vulnerable.
Our community work is quiet, intentional, and long-term. We show up not for recognition, but because the work matters.
See our community impact →Childhood illness reshapes every dimension of a family's life. We stand beside children and families navigating that landscape — with programs designed not just for the body, but for the whole child.
Children in treatment deserve something to look forward to. Something that is theirs — exclusive to them in the bleak stretches — that also opens a door between a child and the parent sitting across the room who loves them and doesn't always have words for what's happening between them.
Get in touch →Tully & Weiss Charities grew out of something simple: a belief that the places and people around us are worth investing in. Under the leadership of Joseph Michael Tully, the charity quietly built a track record in Martinez and the surrounding communities — supporting local schools, businesses, and residents not for recognition, but because that's what neighbors do.
"Tully & Weiss Charities was born in 2015 from a simple conviction: that real change doesn't begin with a title or a budget line — it begins with a decision. I spent my career in public defense, where I saw daily what happens when systems fail people and light runs short. I wanted to fund the opposing force. Not an institution. A movement. So I dedicated ten percent of my practice's profits to this work — because lasting change begins with compassion, opportunity, and the belief that we owe each other more than we often give."
Now the charity is growing — with intention, with new leadership, and with a sharpened focus born from personal experience. Our family walked through childhood cancer. We know the darkness that descends when you hear those words. We know that the world does not stop its demands while you are fighting for your child. And we know that the children in those clinics need something to look forward to — something that is theirs — in the bleakness.
We are a Northern California charity with real community roots, an ambitious program, and something most nonprofits don't have: a reason that is deeply, personally true.
Before the programs had names, there was just the work.
Since 2015, Tully & Weiss Charities has quietly invested in the community of Martinez, CA — from school arts programs to pandemic relief to the lights on Main Street at Christmas. Here is some of what we have built together.
$30,000 in food credits purchased from 16 downtown Martinez restaurants, converted into $50 vouchers distributed to 600 local families — targeting non-essential workers facing financial hardship. Families received meals and a brief sense of normalcy. Restaurants received the customers they desperately needed. One program. Two communities served simultaneously.
Partnering with 8–10 local businesses including yoga studios and boutique gyms, we distributed over 400 vouchers to residents who had faced extended unemployment. Recipients were community-nominated — ensuring aid reached families, seniors, and low-income individuals who needed it most.
Holiday garlands for every light post on Main Street in downtown Martinez — two consecutive years. Because the character of a place matters, and because beauty in shared spaces belongs to everyone.
Led and co-sponsored the first ice rink ever installed in downtown Martinez — a landmark community moment. Co-sponsored again the following year.
Purchased sheet music for the Alhambra High School band, enabling them to learn new repertoire. Funded the purchase and installation of bleachers for the Alhambra High School track team.
When the Martinez Junior High band program had its equipment stolen, we stepped in with a $3,000 instrument donation — because a school without music is a quieter place than it should be.
Donated lighting and stage equipment to the Alhambra High School drama department — giving students the tools to tell their stories on a real stage.
Sponsored the downtown Martinez community Christmas tree — new lights, new decorations, and full installation costs covered. Bringing light to the community during the hardest year.
A $5,000 donation to Alhambra High School sports programs — investing in the students who represent their community on the field.
Care packages for pediatric cancer families currently in treatment in Shasta County — each valued at $500, including $250 in groceries, $100 in gas, and $150 to a local organic juice bar. A small thing. A real thing. The beginning of something larger.
